Protect PDF

A PDF protection tool adds a password to a PDF so that only someone with the password can open and read it. This is the first line of defense when sharing confidential contracts, financial reports, medical records, or personal documents over email or cloud storage. VisualDocs embeds password protection client-side; the Pro plan adds true AES-256 encryption that opens with the password in Adobe Reader and any standards-compliant viewer.

Protection is distinct from restrictions: a password stops someone from opening the file at all, while restrictions (handled by the Unlock tool) stop them from copying, printing, or editing once it is open. For sensitive material you typically want both — a password to gate access, and restrictions to limit what they can do once inside the document. Layering the two gives you control over both who reads and what they can do with it.

Because the free plan processes everything in your browser, the PDF never leaves your device during protection. Remember the password you set — there is no recovery mechanism, and you will need it (or the Unlock tool with the password) to access the document later. Forgetting the password means losing access to your own file, so store it in a password manager or secure note.

The distinction between owner-level and user-level password protection matters in practice: an owner password gates full editing and permission changes, while a user password simply opens the document for reading, and pdf-lib lets you set the user password that most recipients need. The Pro tier adds AES-256-bit encryption, which is the standard Adobe Reader and Foxit both honor, whereas the free tier applies RC4-compatible permission flags that some modern viewers ignore entirely. If you are protecting genuinely sensitive material like tax filings or legal discovery, the upgrade to AES-256 is worth it because the free restriction flags can be stripped trivially by any unlock tool, including this one, leaving the content fully exposed.
